Chemak's Monolog

Monologue
I had to write this for my drama class. I hope you like it.

Girl's name
Chemak

Situation
Chemak is a black girl who lives in Peru (Lima) and is half-blind. She gets abandoned by her father in the middle of the streets while Peru was at war with the Spaniards (who were by the way very racist against black people) sometime between 1850-1900. She is found by a lady who takes her in, and Chemak is telling her about her experience…

Oh good woman, I am so glad you found me and took me in. It seems like yesterday that I was alone and scared and cold. But now I feel safe. It was terrible, I tell you.

I can still remember my daddy's sweet voice telling me he was coming back for me, although he never did.

I hope he is still alive. As soon as he left, this great feeling of solitude covered my heart. The streets were very cold and for me, well, darker than they already were. I thought Lima was the saddest place ever existed in the world that night. People were laying on the side of the streets, begging for me to help them; but I felt bad, because I couldn't see too well and then to make it worse I kept on tripping over them and they would moan in pain.

I felt like crying just hearing them. As much as I wanted to help them I wanted to find my daddy and go home. As I got to one end of the street, crawling and hiding from the miserable soldiers I prayed to God that He would save me and daddy, if he wasn't already in a better place that is. I crawled to the end of the main street and I hid behind a barrel that was lying there. Then I heard a soldier talking to another, I don't know what they were saying, I was too scared to move or hear what they said to one another.
My hands shook as I saw his feet in front of me towards his opponent. He kneeled and he swung his hand back indicating a signal and he lost his watch. I heard a clicking noise right in front of me, so I took a closer look at it, it was a watch, HIS watch. I was terrified.

Then he turned around and looked at me in the eye. I looked at his. He looked at me as if he was going to kill me, even so I thought he was handsome and had the prettiest dark eyes.

He went to grab his watch and someone shot him. I got up and ran; hoping daddy would find me. But there wasn't a trace of him anywhere.

I ran back to where I had started, which wasn't too far from where I was, and daddy wasn't there either. I had been wandering the streets for two days before God put you in my path good woman. I really thank you very much. I just hope I don't have to go through this again, and I hope daddy is still alive and if not in the hands of the good Lord. I am very sleepy now (she yawns). I am going to bed, see you in the morning…

(She gets up from the table and goes to bed)
